Rhino/EHV-1

Horse enthusiasts may have heard about EHV-1, herpes virus, or rhino.  This is a highly contagious virus which has three different forms:  respiratory, neurologic, and reproductive.  Symptoms include fever, lethargy, nasal discharge, and other respiratory symptoms.  The neurologic form may also show muscle weakness, staggering, and even recumbency.  The reproductive form may even cause abortions.

EHV-1 is spread through horse-to-horse contact, aerosol, and contact with contaminated tack equipment.

We recommend vaccinating your horse with a 5-way vaccine followed by a rhino booster vaccination in 2 to 6 weeks.
